2017 Season Preview

We're a week away from Draft Weekend, which means the blog is back! I have my first draft on Sunday and I've done next to no prep, which is probably a sign that we're getting old. When this league started, I spent a solid 40 hours a week on fantasy starting in June. I'm not sure what the schedule of posts and podcasts will be this year, but rest assured that there will be FALAFEL content of some sort. This post is the annual look at how good each team actually is, which can also be used as a cheat sheet for the Division Draft. But before we get to that...

My Big Fat Always Sunny Wedding

I spent the last week in Rhode Island for Tara's cousin's wedding (to answer your question, it's the other side of the family that's why Donny wasn't there). She works for Comedy Central, and has a quirky sense of humor, so I anticipated a unique wedding. I did not anticipate that it would be Always Sunny themed.

As we approached the ceremony, there was a subtle reference that only fans of the show would really recognize.

But once I picked up my seating card, the subtlety ended. Instead of table numbers, each table was named for a Sunny episode. I was sitting at "Mac's Big Break", and next to "The World Series Defense." As we sat down and the bridal party entered the reception to the Game of Thrones theme, I figured that the Sunny stuff was over. I was wrong. The Bride and Groom, on the day that they were joined in holy matrimony, entered their reception to Day Man. I have never seen more confused faces in my life*.

* I saw equally confused faces when the Maid of Honor gave this speech (starting at 15:44-17:22) from The Office. Verbatim. Without changing any of the names.

I don't remember all the other table names or references, and I obviously should have taken more pictures, but there was an open bar and I have my priorities. I did manage to take one more picture, of a pretty random sticker station:

I know a couple of league members are planning a wedding, so if you need ideas I can put you in touch.

FALAFEL Team Power Rankings

As you may have noticed, I've updated the side bar of the blog to include the 2016 results, and I updated the overall records as well. The biggest changes are BAM flip flopping with Belfer/Reap and taking over the top spot, Barnard moving up to 4th, and Esco free-falling from 4th-9th. Bruno also debuts at what I'm assuming is an untouchable last place.

But record alone doesn't indicate the true strength of a team (see the aforementioned Barnard in 4th place). Last year I debuted a new stat: Points Above Average (PAA). This takes each teams total points and subtracts the average points scored in the league that season, then sums up that number for each season the team was in the league. Here are the updated results:

  • Even after putting up a bottom-four scoring season, Levine maintains his position on top of these rankings. He was due for a lucky season in terms of wins, and 2016 delivered.
  • Marco had a strong debut season, but this league is known for its beginner's luck.
  • Even after a down season, Esco is firmly in the top three, with the most total PAA by over 100.
  • After 8 seasons, Barnard, Gutman and Bennett are all within 4 points of each other.
  • Despite his second Steven Bowl win, Alan is pretty much the inverse to Esco, and the lowest active team by a whopping 240 PAA.
The Division Draft has a bigger impact this year, with all three Division Champs guaranteed a playoff spot, so here are the high-level Power Rankings by PAA:
  • Tier 1: Levine, Marco, Esco, BAM (Captain), Ajay
  • Tier 2: Zacherman (Captain), Kumpf, Barnard, Gutman, Bennett
  • Tier 3: Weissbard, Alan (Captain)
  • TBD: Belfer, Reap
Other than Weissbard as the obvious first pick, there's a lot of tough decisions to be made. This time next year, we'll have an idea of who wears the fantasy pants in the Belfer/Reap relationship.

Overall points scored for those who are interested:

All the teams that have been around since day one should break the 10k point barrier other than maybe Alan and Weissbard. See you guys in the Ville.
